Jüri Täht, born in Tartu, Estonia on 26 May 1930, had a lifelong passion for becoming a professional cellist. Despite the challenges of World War II, he pursued his dream. He studied at the State University for Music Stuttgart in Germany but left before completing his studies to move to America. He graduated from Dana College in Nebraska in 1952 and obtained his Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City in 1958. Jüri was a member of the Don Shirley Trio and toured extensively across the United States.

He also had a successful career outside the trio, playing in the Radio City Music Hall symphony orchestra and performing with renowned artists such as Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, and Paul Anka. After retiring as a musician, he worked for Voice of America and managed a foundation that granted scholarships to talented students in Estonia.

Jüri spent his final years in his wife’s childhood home in Tartumaa, Estonia, until his passing on 29 November 2022.
